The figure changed on the day

The complaint that does the most damage to trust, and the easiest of all of them to design out. A figure that moves on the day was almost never a quotation in the first place — it was an estimate, and estimates move.

You cannot fix a number against a house nobody has looked at. Everything else follows from that.

What a fixed figure requires

A survey first In person, or by video where size and distance make that sensible.
A measured inventory The document the figure is written against and stands or falls on.
Written, and dated A quotation with a stated validity period, not a number on a phone call.
Scope stated What is included, what is not, and which instruction level it covers.
Change in writing Nothing altered on the day without your agreement, confirmed in writing.
No price on the website Because none is knowable before the survey. Anywhere.

Why web-form figures move

Because they are generated from what a customer can see and describe, and a customer cannot see the things that change a move: a boarded loft, a shared lift with a small door opening, a street with no standing, a lane that will not take a vehicle.

None of that is the customer's fault. It is the inevitable consequence of pricing a job nobody has looked at, and it is why the figure changes when somebody finally does.

The inventory is the contract

A quotation means nothing without the thing it was written against. Ours states the inventory it is based on and stands for a defined period from its date, both set out in the terms.

If what turns up on the day differs materially from that inventory, we tell you before continuing and confirm any revision in writing. What we will not do is load, finish, and adjust the invoice afterwards.

What can legitimately change

Materially more volume than was surveyed. Access substantially different from what was described — a lift out of service, a bay never suspended, a lane a vehicle cannot use. Work added on the day at your request.

Those are real and they are listed in the terms. Everything else is the firm's risk, which is what a quotation is for.

Why there are no prices on this website

Not coyness. A figure published without knowing the volume, the access or the distance is either meaningless or a hook, and the second figure always arrives later. We would rather survey and write one down.

Questions about the figure changed on the day

Will you quote over the phone?
We will talk usefully and tell you what the survey will look for. We will not put a figure on it, because a figure given before anybody has counted is an estimate and it moves.
In person or video?
Video works well for flats, smaller homes and anything a long way away. In person is better for a house with a boarded loft or decades of accumulation.
How long does a quotation stand?
For the period stated on it and in the terms, against the inventory taken at the survey. Outside that it is re-quoted rather than quietly honoured or quietly raised.
What can legitimately change the figure?
Materially more volume than surveyed, access substantially different from what was described, or work you add on the day. All three are listed in the terms and all three are raised with you at the time.
Is a deposit required?
Where the quotation states one. The terms set out when it is refundable and when some of it may be retained against costs already committed.
Why no prices on the site at all?
Because a published figure that ignores volume, access and distance is either meaningless or a hook. There is no rate card here and there will not be one.
